Discussion:
3M Nextel Black Velvet paint?

I've searched the net and don't find anything but references (no sources)
to 3M Nextel Black Velvet paint. 3M has a Nextel trademark line, but not
paint, rather fabric and other coverings. Is the paint still available,
and under what name, and from what source?

Alternately, I also found other paints for optical flat black applications
including Martin Black Paint N-15O-1 and Martin Black Velvet Paint, and
Chemglaze Black Paint Z3O6. I couldn't find a Martin web site, and the
Chemglaze site has no specific information.

What optical flat black coatings are in common use, and where do I get
them? Aerosol spray is preferred since the application is small so requires
only a small quantity.

Thanks!

The 'black surfaces FAQ' is here. Not sure how current the info is,
but it may be helpful:

Thanks Paul...checked it out, and it's dated Jan 2000, but more current
than the linked thread below.

For the record, a colleague tracked this down, but it's 10 years old.
Still, good summary of lots of options.

I've quite successfully use Floquil Engine Black paint for a nice black
surface. The paint is sold in small bottles for the model railroading hobby
and is a thin laquer based paint with a low binder content. It can be
brushed on with little worry of brushmarks if thinned a little.
Also, Krylon Ultra Flat Black in their lineup of paints does a good job of
making things dead black.

We (my colleague & I) have been pleased with Avian black (lookup Art
Springsteen, Avian Technologies). It seemed to offer the best
black/diffuseness for well-off-normal scattering angles.

Hi,
does anyone know of an ultra black flat paint that withstands
continous immersion in ethylenglycol? Seems it has to be some
fuel-resistant paint, maybe a polyurethan based paint?

Thanks all for your replies. Just to get it into the archives, I received
the following information by e-mail following up a lead from another source
that referred me to Red Spot Inc.
-------------------------------------------
Red Spot has discontinued the sale and manufacture of Nextel paint, primers
and components.

We have negotiated with Mankiewicz Coatings LLC, a division of Mankiewicz
Gebr & Co., to take over the distribution of the Nextel paint, primers and
components in North America. Mankiewicz Gebr & Co. has been the
manufacturer and distributor of Nextel for the European market since 1983.

Here is contact information for Mankiewicz Coatings LLC:

The only good ones were made out of nearly extinct baby alien tails
and were taken out of production by the EPA and GREENPEACE in the late
1970s. The paints had a tendancy to absorb light while at the same
time causing Spotted Owls to be born with two heads. The EPA was queer
for Spotted Owls and GREENPEACE thought we were running out of white
light and tried to have Diane Feinstein declair it an endangered
substance.

They also claimed the paints were toxic. Crap, EVERYTHING is toxic if
you're stupid. Milk is toxic. Lots of people die from too much water.

Try water based flat black house paint, if you can figure out how to
make it stick to anything. :-)
