A while back, somebody (Phil Hobbs?) was asking if ThorLabs was still
including a box of "lab snacks" even with small orders.

The answer is "Yes", and in both senses of the word "small". I just
received a an order that was for about $20 and came in a box that was
about 10" by 8" by 5".

The Lab Snacks box was inside - just barely fit. (Peanuts, trail mix
bar, orange TicTacs, red Swizzles, plus a few more things.)

Why the small order? ThorLabs was having a "Free UPS ground shipping"
promotion, and needed some laser diode sockets. Just barely found out
about the promotion - it ended about 8 hours after I placed my order.

We didn't get them with every order in my former lab. We tried to
figure out if there is a "threshold" order value when you get the
snack box, haha.

speaking of food... lunch time!!

Cheers,
Matthias

We've been getting several orders from Thorlabs recently, and we think
the function is dependent on left over box space in the packing
container. We ordered an optical bench plate which was not cheap and
it came packed in a shipping crate with no lab snacks. We ordered a
few miscellaneous hardware which were pretty cheap and the box was big
enough to hold the snacks and the parts. I've seen a couple of
creative packing jobs to be able to fit the snack box in. So we're
thinking the key is to have irregular sized parts in your order in
order to provide enough left over space for a box of snacks. Like
ordering a big angle bracket and a couple small mirrors or something
so that a big box is needed for the bracket with space left over.
Okay maybe we thought about this too much....
